Rental license
A rental license is a local permit that some Maryland counties and towns require before an owner can rent out a home.
A rental license is local permission to operate a rental, and it is separate from state rules. The People's Law Library says some Maryland counties and cities require landlords to have a current rental property license.
Its county table, as of October 2026, shows a long-term rental license is required in Prince George's County, and not required in Calvert, Charles or St. Mary's County. Some towns inside those counties have their own rules, and county proposals can change, so confirm with the county and the town before you list a home.
A license is different from the state's lead paint registration, which applies to pre-1978 rentals everywhere in Maryland. An owner may need both. If you rent in more than one place, track each renewal date. Our guide to the Southern Maryland rental license rules lists what we know for each county.
