Rent-ready

Rent-ready describes a home that is clean, repaired, in working order and fully ready for a new tenant to move in on day one.

A rent-ready home is one a tenant can move into with no surprises. It is clean, working and documented. That usually means fresh paint where needed, clean floors, working appliances, locks and smoke detectors, and no known repairs left open.

Being rent-ready affects money. A home that photographs well and shows well rents faster, and it starts the lease with fewer disputes. A home with open repairs invites complaints in the first month and weak photos in the listing. Rent-ready also supports a clean start for the move-in inspection, because the starting condition is clear.

The work done between tenants to get there is called make-ready. For pre-1978 homes, it also means a valid lead certificate; see lead paint registration. Our page on what is rent-ready gives a checklist owners can use before they list.
