Do I need a rental license in Upper Marlboro?
For the town, no. The Maryland People’s Law Library lists no long-term or short-term rental license for the Town of Upper Marlboro, in a table updated September 22, 2026. For the county, yes. Prince George’s County says a single-family rental property must have a valid rental license. That covers any building where a landlord provides one or two dwelling units. The license runs for 2 years, and the cost is in the county’s DPIE fee schedule. After an approved application, the county issues a temporary license for 30 to 90 days so an inspector can visit.
So most single-family owners in Upper Marlboro still need the county license. The county lists exemptions, such as a tenant who is the landlord’s close relative. Read the county page for the full list. See the rental license entry and our Southern Maryland rental license guide.
